Every 4 years, the world focuses its sporting attention on the World Cup, and every 4 years, I find a new favorite player. It’s often the little things, a rad haircut, some strange grooming practices, unusual attire, or simply an awesome name/nickname. I can still remember my favorite players from past major international competitions (World Cups and European Championships alike): In 1998 (the first World Cup I watched) it was Frenchman Emmanuel Petit; in 2006, it was, at the 2008 Euros, it was Turkish defender Servet Çetin, in 2010 in South Africa, it was ; and in the 2012 Euros it was . I often find myself scanning the starting lineups during the national anthems, looking for just the right guy to cheer for, as well as the technical area and substitutes bench, hoping to find someone with that special je ne sais quoi which will help him capture my heart and become my ‘favorite player’ of that particular game.
