Mixtapes for Camille: 2007
This is the 2007 mixtape I made for my sister. Antony and the Johnson’s “You Are My Sister” (with Boy George) and Sun Kil Moon’s “Glenn Tipton” originally appeared on the disc just before “1234,” but Spotify didn’t have these songs available. Enjoy!

Mixtapes for Camille: 2006
Here’s the 2006 mixtape I made for my sister. The second track was Primal Scream’s “Country Girl” and Nouvelle Vague’s “Dancing with Myself” and Serena Ryder’s “Sisters of Mercy” cover versions came between “Maybe Sparrow” and “The Greatest” on the actual disc, but Spotify doesn’t have those songs. Enjoy!

Mixtapes for Camille: 2005
Here’s the 2005 mixtape I made for my sister. Sun Kil Moon’s cover of Modest Mouse’s “Neverending Math Equation” was included between “Made for TV Movie” and “You are a Runner and I Am My Father’s Son,” but Spotify doesn’t have that song. Enjoy!

Mixtapes for Camille: 2003
Here’s the 2003 mixtape I made for my sister. I spent the first 8 months without any music, living in England, before returning to college in August of this year. On the plane ride home, I listened to the airplane music station, taking obsessive notes and soaking up all the sounds. It had been a…

Mixtapes for Camille: 2002
Here’s the 2002 mix I made for my sister. This was the first full year that I lived entirely without any popular music (and outside of the United States), so I heard none of these songs when they were first released. Enjoy!

30 Tracks [Best of November/December 2014]
I didn’t listen to a ton of music late in the 2014, apparently. Not a ton of memorable stuff leapt out at me. Some stuff I remember liking: Leif Vollebekk’s North Americana album, Field Report’s self-titled record, Other Lives, Tired Pony, Sinkane, and St. Paul and the Broken Bones’ Half the City. Enjoy!

Mixtapes for Camille: 2001

-
Mixtapes for Camille: 1999
Here’s the 1999 mix I made for my sister. I included the live acoustic version of Live’s “They Stood Up for Love” as well as two missing tracks right before Built To Spill’s “The Plan” at the end of the disc: Bonny ‘Prince’ Billy’s “A Minor Place” and Smog’s “Let’s Move to the Country,” but…

Mixtapes for Camille: 1998
Here’s the 1998 mix I made for my sister. It’s missing a few tracks that Spotify didn’t have: The Silver Jews’ “Honk if You’re Lonely” fits between “Crazy” and “Let Me Go”; P.J. Harvey’s “The Wind” fits between “Circles” and “P.S. You Rock My World” and Embrace’s “Come Back To What You Know” fits between…

Mixtapes for Camille: 1997
Here’s the 1997 mix I made for my sister. “Heywood Lane” by Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci should have appeared between “Shame on You” and “Father of Mine,” but Spotify doesn’t have it. Enjoy!

Mixtapes for Camille: 1996
Here’s the mixtape I made for the year 1996. This is about the year where my adolescent memories really start to kick in, and the hormonal imprinting, too. Ready or not …

Mixtapes for Camille: 1995
Here’s the mixtape I made to represent the year 1995. Some real howlers on this one, and a couple of gems which stand up nicely. Spotify didn’t have The Rentals’ song “These Days,” which fit in the original mix between “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” and “Just A Girl”. Enjoy!
-
Mixtapes for Camille: 1994
In 1994, I was 12. What??? The songs on this mixtape are still all out of order, but here’s the essential 1994 mix. Enjoy!

Here’s a playlist of 50 songs I listened to and liked in October. Artists/records I really enjoyed included Sean Rowe, Vulfpeck, Chris Staples, Steve Gunn, Dawn Golden’s Still Life album, Passenger’s Whispers, and Jenny Lewis’ new record The Voyager. Enjoy!

Mixtapes for Camille: 1993
Here’s the playlist I made for the year 1993. Sequencing problems once again on this one, and Spotify didn’t have Palace Brothers’ “Idle Hands are the Devil’s Playthings“, but other than that, here’s the mix:

Mixtapes for Camille: 1992
Here’s another mixtape I made for my sister Camille’s Christmas present. All songs released in 1992. Playlist order is off, but the songs are all there. Music fans, what other songs from 1992 ought I to have included?

Cesare Pavese
I just finished Geoffrey Brock’s translation of Cesare Pavese’s poetry: Disaffection: Complete Poems 1930-1950. It was outstanding. I think I had been vaguely aware of Pavese as a 20th century giant of Italian literature, but I had never read anything by or about him, apart from some long forgotten praise by Phil Levine, who was…

Mixtapes for Camille: 1991
This week’s mixtape was the second in a series of 21 mixtapes I made as a Christmas present for my sister Camille a few years ago. The playlist order is messed up because the artists are presented in alphabetical order, which wasn’t the case on the actual disc, but this is the 1991 mix (featuring only songs…
